I stumbled upon the Velveteins through a delightful bout of Instagram happenstance. I gave the boys a fair listen and found myself scouring the internet for more. While their catalog is light from being fairly fresh to the scene, their content is deeply satisfying. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m pushing hard for these guys to get down to Los Angeles as soon as possible.
The Edmonton, AB lads have a knack for capturing hypnotic nostalgia within their surf guitar riffs and caramel-ly bass lines. Currently forged from the minds of Spencer Morphy and Addison Hiller, their lyricism is intricately woven within their melodies and makes for an effortless listen. Although you can taste the psych-rock influence, the Velveteins don’t feel the least bit dated nor redundant. It’s indie-/folk- rock edging towards breezy beach blues that so many bands are aiming for, but these boys manage to create a sound that’s all their own.
You’d be wise to put these guys on your radar because I have a feeling they’re just what we’ve been looking for in our new favorite band. Keep your ears peeled for new music, but for now, there’s an EP. You can get it here.
When will they make it down to tour the States? I’m not sure, but I really hope it’s soon. It really better be soon…
