How many bands do you know of that formed after meeting on Craigslist? Probably not many… but that’s exactly how Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian got their start as the electronic infused alt-pop band, Capital Cities. Both men had been practicing and studying music since their formative years and when Simonian posted an ad offering his talent in 2008, Merchant was intrigued and pursued the musician. Since then, the duo has created a collection of innovative songs, with bouncing melodies and the partial use of a vintage analog synthesizer.
Pulling together money from their own pockets, Capital Cities toured 10 countries, garnering an impressive following of international fans. Playful and silly live, often donning colorful matching outfits and oversized glasses, their home based fandom is growing just as quickly. Capital Cities signed with Capitol Records in 2012. Over the past year, they’ve rereleased several EPs and a premier full-length album has plans to drop this summer.
